Why would you want to ionize air?
I’ve heard that many air purifiers have ionizers in them (I have one two), and I have never really understood the importance or the goal of ionizing the air. Besides the reasons on a quantum scale, why would you want ionize the oxygen and what does it do for us as humans?
Steven is talking about UV lamps, not ionizing air purifiers. They are completely different. The reason they want to ionize the air is because the dust particles and soot and other junk in the air is more easily ionized. They can then have a metal filter that has a voltage on it that pulls the ionized junk onto it. Thus, the ionized filter can pull the junk out of the air more efficiently than other filters. They can also be more quiet, as they do not need moving parts to create airflow.
The problem with these filters it that they create ozone. If they ionize oxygen, ozone can form. Ozone is good for us in the upper atmosphere, where it blocks bad radiation from the sun. However, ozone in the low atmosphere is really bad for us, if we breath it. So you should avoid ionizing air filters because the ozone is going to hurt you more in the long run. This is actually why the Sharper Image went out of business. They faced too many lawsuits relating to their Ionic Breeze air filters and the company went out of business.

Want to make an international flight, an "ionic air purifier"; will allow TSA or confiscated.?
Decided keep the air on the plane a bit cleaner than usual, I wear the 1.5 inches by 3 inches purifier flying 12 hours on a strap around my neck uses a button cell CR 2032. Will TSA let me do? or will they be confiscated? I have a small language translator using the same kind of batteries (3) which is long in coming as well. My goal is not to inhale the germs floating.
I do not know if the TSA confiscate it, but if you have attached to your neck while you're on the airplane people could watch you closely. Americans tend to be more suspicious (* especially * On airplanes) nowdays with all the talk of terrorists. So I would advise against wearing them, unless you want to be watched your entire flight. If you are concerned by this germ, why not try a pill? There are these little pills called "Airborne" are expected to work very well. You drop in a glass of water, they sparkle around for a bit and eventually dissolve, and then you just drink! I heard people giving them very good reviews. You should try them instead!

How do I know if my ionizer air filter creates ozone?
I know not all air filters ionizers create ozone, and I have pets that I can be near depletion. Other ions are fine. I just have not been using The Booster "Performance" for fear that it creates ozone. I HAP412N Holmes-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier. Thank you!
That's a good question! HEPA filters generally do not rely on external power to ionize the air, and should produce no measurable ozone. Some electrostatic precipitation devices (and UV germicidal lamps that were used in the smoke filters) are not ozone, and possibly some oxides of nitrogen, which not only damage the textile and rubber products, but even the lungs with prolonged use. If there is a frame metal pins or high voltage through it, it is suspect, but if it has an activated carbon filter after, not quantity of ozone should happen. If an on / off switch for the ionizer, just leave it off. There are a number of test kits for the ozone layer, some dollars to a backing paper of time (probably what you might use) to machines costing hundreds of dollars.

Air Purifier make the buzzing noise?
Hi, I just bought a HEPA air purifier Holmes (literally just purchase), and in a few hours he began making a strange buzzing electric. I think it comes from the ionizer, since when the ionizer is off there is no noise. Is this normal or is this a problem with the machine? Has anyone else had this problem? Thank you in advance. Never mind, I'm getting rid of the thing anyway.

Does anyone have experience with air purifiers for home? I'm looking for people who have.?
I am particularly interested by people who have tried them as Ionic Breeze Sharper Image, Oreck, Ionic Pro, etc. I am also interested in people who have used filter HEPA type I allergies seem worse as I get older and would like to have clean air in my house. Thank you
Although in my own experience, I would avoid anything Oreck. I bought two of them and they barely made a dent in the house. Do not believe everything you see a infomerical. Also from reading consumer reports and see the various items on them, I would also avoid the Ionic Pro. From what I have Mon May cost more, but you're better off going with a machine of high quality HEPA. Sure they cost more, buy you get the results you deserve. Check out consumerreports.org for more details. They had a nice break down with machine they tested.
